Today, nothing is off-limits sexually because supposedly “we’re born this way.” It is this thinking that has driven scientists and researchers to earnestly search for a so-called “gay gene” that proves, in their view, that individuals are “born this way,” and therefore homosexuality is natural and simply cannot be helped.
In a way, the I was born this way” argument isn’t wrong. According to God’s Words, we are all born into sin (Psalm 51:5; Romans 5:12). Everyone is born with a propensity toward a particular kind of sin. For some, their sin nature manifests itself in a struggle with anger, substance abuse, sexual promiscuity, or homosexuality.
But just because we are born into sin doesn’t give us an excuse and license to sin.
We’re called to repent of our sin, put our trust in Christ alone for our salvation, and then, by the power of the Holy Spirit within us, fight against our sin nature – not fight for the Church’s acceptance of it.
And one specific command Christians have been given is to “flee from sexual immorality” (1 Corinthians 6:18) – which includes homosexuality.
Yes, we’re all “born this way” as sinners, but we don’t have to stay that way. Jesus Christ died and was resurrected to rescue us.
