Recent reports indicate that the Obama administration has released new guidelines that require all federally-funded women’s shelters to admit men who identify themselves as women. The potential for abuse and predatory behavior is obvious. However, the real and eternal life-threatening problem lies in the bigger picture. Ken Ham in his Answers In Genesis blog writes,
Now as Christians, we should have compassion on all people who are in need of help, including those who call themselves transgender. But we also recognize that God created male and female (Genesis 1:27), and choosing to live as the opposite gender is sinful. Our secular culture does not recognize the biblical truth that we were created male and female, but instead tries to accommodate sinful behaviors. Of course, we will only see this increase as our culture continues to turn further from God’s Word.
Further, as Dr. Ham points out, it’s one thing for an individual to have sinful behaviors – we all do. It’s another thing for cultures and nations to condone such behaviors and even create laws to protect them! He continues,
Once again, President Obama has not only rejected God’s clear teaching in Genesis about male and female, but he also has no understanding of the sin nature of all humans. Yes, we should be extremely concerned about predators, for after all, “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked” (Jeremiah 17:9).
All of us will stand before the Lord one day. Can you imagine President Obama bragging about his legacy of attacking marriage, undermining the family, openly promoting those who willfully rebel against God’s created order, and putting children and others at risk from sinful behavior?
What is the appropriate response from those who follow Christ to those who consider themselves transgender? Well, it’s the same response we should have whenever we meet broken, hurting individuals—share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Instead of ignoring or avoiding unbelievers who have chosen this sinful lifestyle, we need to reach out to them in love, offering them the only things all of us really need—the peace, love, and forgiveness that Jesus offers all who will believe (Romans 10:9).
It should be noted that sin is clearly specified in Scripture, with many examples given. And God sees any sin as a stumbling block – an obstacle that will prevent us from ever reaching the glory He has prepared for us (James 2:10, NIV). This means that unrepentant lying and murdering, for example, are equivalent to unrepentant deviant sexual behavior in that all or any one of these will keep the offender separated from God (Romans 3:23, NIV).
Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor practicing homosexuals nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will
inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, NIV)
And, if cultures and nations succumb to allowing practices that are specifically disapproved of by God, societal corruption and ultimately destruction will be the only outcome. Is that the kind of world we really want to live in?
