Just in my lifetime, I have seen an unbelievable increase in the ignorance of God’s word in America. Just today, Congress stepped out of its own lawful bounds to impose a new law re-defining marriage. God invented not only the word “marriage”, but defined it for us. Yet in defiance of a Divine definition, members of a government went out of their way to change God’s definition to something that “better fit” lifestyles in the U.S.A.
It’s just these lifestyle changes among our citizens (and now our government) that remind me of a song written by Mark Hall of the Christian worship group, “Casting Crowns”. It is a tale of a town, a city, and a nation, each of which was ignorant of what was going on right before its eyes. I have taken the liberty to reproduce those words here because I think they make visible a fatal vulnerability of mankind, which our Father has continued to warn us about throughout Scripture and throughout time. Do we really want God to judge our nation, the land He gave us, as one who forgot its King?
Mark Hall wrote, “I set out to set the classic hymn “Oh Little Town of Bethlehem” to new music and, in the process, rediscovered the song and its message. They slept through it. Bethlehem missed the birth of the Savior of the world. Jerusalem did the same with Jesus’ ministry among them. Seems crazy – ’til we as a nation look in the mirror.”
